the best way to fix blogger layout issues...

...is to use wordpress it has been fun but wordpress is easier for me to layout. I copied all of my blogs here and I don't think I have much reason to use blogger anymore.

Okay the layout of these things is incredibly annoying

so I like the blog thing. But I hate (HATE!HATE!) trying to put photos up. It simply doesn't work the way I think it would. If anyone has wisdom for me please let me know.

Spring 2009 paintings

Two collages that I did as part of a painting class at Tyler. I was confused by the voodoo power that these Vogue ads are supposed to have. I grouped them so the photos with someone staring straight at the camera and two page spreads are on the left. The photos get less and less powerful as they go to the right.

Here I combined a specfic kind of "beauty" shot with collage. I wasn't trying to debase the images (I have a lot of respect for people who make these things). I also wasn't trying to make a "nice" design. I was trying to reconcile with acrylic paint and magazine photo collage. I think that my work with these materials is "bad" and that interests me. I think I was also playing with the relationship that we are supposed to have with these women. one thing I did which I will try again is cutting the picture in the middle and gluing the outside edges together this makes the outside edge a focus as well as the middle.

Now, Ben, I am blogging now.

I think that I could benefit from blogging again and Ben asked when I would. It reminds me of when Daniel Johnston asks his friend (who must be like, ten) to ask him "Why don't you start playing out again". Does anybody else have that tape?

Okay so this is not a real blog post. This is a post about how I can't post right now. I am working on designs for the last three days of Alexis Nutini's Printmaking class. I have not had much time to work outside of class and the 3 hours get eaten up if I don't plan. I promise I will post photos of the prints when I am done.

More Junk thoughts

Reaching for my book in the dark I thought "how to see how to see a work of art in total darkness in total darkness". This made me think of a painting entitled the burning of "the burning of the houses of parliament". I guess this useless construction is limitless but some work better than others. I wonder why? I have been trying to develop a recursive knock knock joke but it is really impossible unless the knocker and the person behind the door are computers.

Bad Joke - one of many

So, Jesus is just born and everyone is stunned and quiet when there is a knock on the barn post. "Ho! ho! ho!" says the huge man in red velvet with white fur cuffs. "Who are you!!???!" asks Joseph reaching for a staff to do what he has to if he has to. "I'm Santa Claus!" says the intruder. Joseph and Mary are stunned but it seems this stranger knows the newborn Jesus. He reaches over to give Jesus a kiss. Jesus speaks up and says "Get behind me, Santa!"

some thoughts

if that painting doesn't work out, you can always turn it into a painting.
make the painting more visible.
why does it need to be more than a painting?
a painting = a physical object (a support) + opportunity for illusion
don't try to make good paintings, try to make objects that are active

Another Semester Ending

Well, I'm sure I've alienated some looking for info in this blog by neglecting to post for months. That being the case, I am posting to mark the time for myself. This semester has been a very productive one.
I have three studio classes:

  • Figure Drawing (Julian Kreimer)
  • Advanced Painting (Elisabeta Meksin)
  • Intro Ceramics (Neil Patterson)
The Ceramics class has been huge because it gave me a chance to process the dirt around my house. This has lead to making pots from the clay and paintings and drawings as well. I have learned how to throw on the potter's wheel which is not surprising because of it's similarity to woodturning. The throwing has brought me the idea of "moves" and I am exploring this slowly in painting.

The figure drawing has been great because we deal with the figure as a subject to use rather than fixate on analytically. I have thought a lot about the language of marks and learned a little bit more about what I am doing with my doodles.

I have checked out the book "Secret Knowledge" by David Hockney and it is helping me think through drawing what I see and what my camera sees. Also "Perspective in Perspective" (I forgot the authors name) is huge in it's influence. I would like to buy this but... out of print, $200 is a little steep.

Leeza (as Ms. Meksin likes to be called) suggested I look into Gogol. I bought a paperback of "Dead Souls" and I will see how I like it. I'm concerned about missing most of the intent because of the translation.

That's all for now maybe I'll post some photos soon.

Seed leaf tree

Here is a project I also did for Nichola Kinch at Tyler. I realized I hadn't given her any credit for the workspace piece. She Shot both of these videos. Thanks again, Nichola!

Sweet Workspace! performance/installation

installation/performance with a subset of my workspace junk. 5 minutes to setup. I used a timer to tell when to start the music which would end exactly at 5 minutes. Apologies to the Roots for mangling the beautiful "Here I come" I was going to just shorten it imperceptibly but...
